Episode 78: Ben Yagoda

Ben Yagoda has been tracking the influence of British English on the American version for years at the "NOOB" blog, Not One-Off Britishisms, which carries the subtitle British Words and Expressions that Have Got Popular in the U.S. The topic has resonated, with more than 3 million visits to his webpage.

That work now brings us the new book Gobsmacked: The British Invasion of American English. In it, Yagoda looks at the recent influence of Britishisms on American soil.

Yagoda, professor emeritus of English at the University of Delaware, has published more than a dozen books, including Will Rogers: A BiographyAbout Town: “The New Yorker” and the World It MadeWhen You Catch an Adjective, Kill It: The Parts of Speech, for Better and/or Worse; and The Sound on the Page: Style and Voice in Writing.

Sign up below for the Zoom link, and then join us at 4:30 p.m. EDT (20:30 UTC) on Tuesday, Oct. 22.
